The journalists of the new Leningrad newspaper, "Nevskoye Vremya", are in the hall, along with their wives and husbands. It's noisy and cheerful, and music can be heard from the next room — as befits New Year's Eve. But the usual New Year's merriment is imbued with something else —something upbeat, inspired, and somewhat nervous, familiar to us from situations when long-awaited surprises await us or the completion of a good and difficult undertaking. And so it was —after midnight, the journalists were awaiting both the New Year of 1991 and the first issue of Nevskoye Vremya, which was about to arrive from the Lenizdat (Leningrad Publishing Center)  printing house... Every journalist knows this feeling—the anticipation and welcome of the first issue of their first newspaper (magazine, radio, or television program). That was 20 years ago...

Today's journalists at this city newspaper, working there in a beautiful and modern manner, I'm afraid, don't even realize how their publication's history began, unaware of many of the nuances of that "time" that marked the beginning of their newspaper's life.
This is what we'll talk about.

В зале – журналисты редакции новой ленинградской газеты «Невское время» со своими жёнами и мужьями. Шумно, весело, из соседнего зала звучит музыка — как и положено в предновогоднюю ночь. Но привычное новогоднее веселье наполнено ещё чем-то — чем-то приподнятым, воодушевляемым, несколько нервозным, знакомым нам по ситуациям, когда нас ожидают долгожданные сюрпризы или финиш доброго и трудного дела. Так оно и было — журналисты после полуночи ждали и новый 1991 год, и тираж первого номера газеты «Невское время», который вот-вот должны были доставить из типографии Лениздата… Любому журналисту знакомо это чувство — чувство ожидания и встречи первого номера первой в его жизни газеты (журнала, радио- или телепрограммы).
Было это 20 лет назад…
Сегодняшние журналисты этой городской газеты, работая в ней красиво и современно, боюсь, даже не догадываются, с чего начиналась история их издания, не ведают о многих нюансах того «времени», которое начало отсчёт дней жизни их родной газеты. Об этом и пойдёт речь.

On the eve of the 20th anniversary of the publication of the first issue of "Nevskoye Vremya", which over the course of just over 7,300 days has become one of the leading periodicals in our city, I felt the urge to recount the first hours, even the first minutes, of the newspaper's birth, and even its, figuratively speaking, conception. Why did this desire arise, you ask? It's because, by the will of fate, by the will of time (this word will have to be repeated often), I was fortunate enough to be present at the origins of "Nevskoye Vremya's" emergence in the media landscape of Leningrad and St. Petersburg. And if I began using obstetric terminology at the beginning of this narrative, then I was both its genetic father and its godfather.

В канун 20-летия выхода в свет №1 газеты «Невское время», ставшей за эти 7 300 с небольшим дней одним из ведущих периодических изданий нашего города, возникло желание рассказать о первых часах, даже первых минутах рождения газеты и даже о её, образно говоря, зачатии. Почему это желание возникло именно у меня, спросите вы? А всё потому, что волею судьбы, волею времени (это слово придётся повторять часто) именно мне посчастливилось стоять у истоков появления на свет «Невского времени» на медийных просторах Ленинграда – Санкт-Петербурга. И если уж я стал в начале повествования использовать акушерскую терминологию, то был для этой газеты и генетическим, и крёстным отцом.
