Reasons for Reading

While telling my students about the civil society that would be created in Russia, I used a metaphor I myself liked: "Civil society isn't built, it's cultivated."
After all, construction and farming are very different activities. A building is the sole responsibility of its creator, from the first architectural sketch to the last nail.

A garden, a vegetable patch, a field—all this is nature; humans can only make temporary adjustments. A building rests on a foundation, a plant on its roots.

Construction can be completed by any deadline, but no decree can hasten the harvest. A builder will do as the building's owner tells him; telling a farmer is pointless: he knows best what grows in his garden and how. Construction can be suspended for any length of time; farming requires continuous, daily labor.

Opening Paragraph

How did public consciousness change during the revolutionary process that occurred during those years (1985-1993)? What is public consciousness in Russia anyway? How are new ideas inculcated? It now emerges that all my publications of that time were devoted to precisely these issues.
Little by little, I, a person of a completely different profession, began to be published in periodicals in 1987. Some of what I wrote, it seems to me, has not lost its relevance. This collection contains articles, notes, and interviews from a direct and active participant in the events that unfolded over the course of twenty years, lightly interspersed with pockets of personal memory.
Whether the collection reveals consistent themes is for the reader to judge.

Quotes from the Book

From an interview with G.I. Trubnikov in the regional newspaper "Vperyod" (Forward), April 29, 1989:
"...what we lack most is freedom. Freedom from the fear of the state machine we inherited. Freedom of thought, paralyzed by dogma. Freedom to profitably sell the product of one's labor. Freedom to buy what one desires. Political freedoms, as formulated in the 'Declaration of Human Rights.'
Liberation has begun, but we are still receiving freedom in homeopathic doses. Perhaps this is correct: after a long period of hunger, one cannot immediately eat one's fill — it would be fatal. But the thirst is enormous. I believe that the dosage of freedom should be decisively increased."
