On February 28, 1977, the annual meeting of the Department of History of the USSR Academy of Sciences was held, where the main results of the Department's activities in 1976 were discussed. In the report of the Department, in the opening speech of Acting Academician-Secretary of the Department Yu. V. Bromley, in the speeches of members of the Department academicians I. I. Mints, M. V. Nechkina, B. B. Piotrovsky, B. A. Rybakov, corresponding members of the USSR Academy of Sciences K. G. Karakeev, G. F. Kim, I. D. Kovalchenko, S. L. Tikhvinsky, Z. V. Udaltsova and other participants of the meeting comprehensively reviewed the most important results of the activities of the Bureau and scientific institutions of the Department in the first year of the tenth five-year plan, outlined the tasks and prospects for further research.
In 1976, the research activities and scientific and organizational work of the Department and its institutions, as well as scientists and historians of other academic institutions, were aimed at implementing the decisions of the XXV Congress of the CPSU and implementing the tasks of the first year of the tenth five-year plan. The Congress set great and responsible tasks for Soviet science, noting its growing role in communist construction and emphasizing the need to increase its contribution to the creation of the material and technical base of communism and to the formation of the communist worldview of the working people. For historians, the most important tasks are to study the laws of the transition from capitalism to socialism and communism, the theoretical problems of a developed socialist society in our country and the world socialist system, and the study of socio-economic and political processes in developing countries and the capitalist world.
