Football and Sport in Iran: From Ancient Traditions to Modern Stands

Iran is a country with a thousand-year history where sport has always been more than just entertainment; it is a part of national identity, character education, and even philosophy. Here, ancient fighting rituals intertwine with light-filled stadiums where tens of thousands of fans roar, and modern Olympic achievements. Let's talk about what Iranian sport is living today, how football became the nation's main passion, and which sports preserve the memory of this wonderful country's great past.

Football — the nation's main passion

Today, football in Iran is not just a game. It is a national obsession that fills stadiums, stops the hearts of millions, and unites people of all ages and social classes. The history of Iranian football began in the early 20th century when British oil workers and diplomats brought the ball to Persian land. The first football club, "Iran Club," was founded in 1920, and soon teams appeared at the American College and the School of Political Science. Already in 1926, the Tегерan team, then known as "Tегeran XI," played friendly matches with teams from neighboring Baku and even defeated the British Tегeran team. These matches were the first steps towards making football the main sport of the country.

The Iranian Football Federation was founded in the same year of 1920, and in 1945 the country became a member of FIFA, and in 1954 a member of the Asian Football Confederation. Since then, Iranian football has begun its rise on the international stage. However, the real bloom came at the end of the 1960s and 1970s when the Iranian national team won the Asian Cup three times in a row: in 1968, 1974, and 1976. This was the golden age when Iranian footballers were considered the strongest on the continent, and the country was preparing for its first World Cup, which took place in 1978 in Argentina.

The Iran National Team — "Tim Melly" on the world stage

The Iran national team, which Iranians proudly call "Tim Melly" (National Team), has long become a symbol of national unity. Its history has known both ups and downs, but the main thing is that it has always remained in the heart of every Iranian. After the 1979 revolution, Iranian football went through a difficult period of isolation, but in the 1990s the team once again made a statement. The brightest moment of the recent history was the victory over the US team at the 1998 World Cup in France — a match that had both sporting and huge political significance. For millions of Iranians, this victory became a symbol of hope and pride.

The Iran national team regularly participates in the final rounds of World Cup championships. It qualified for the World Cup in 1978, 1998, 2006, 2014, 2018, and 2022. At the 2018 World Cup in Russia, the Iranians almost qualified from their group, losing only in the last round, and at the 2022 tournament in Qatar, they posed a serious challenge to the teams of England, the United States, and Wales. As of 2022, the Iran national team ranked 21st in the FIFA ranking, which is one of the best results among Asian teams.

The Iranian national team is known for its discipline, physical strength, and tactical flexibility. Stars of Iranian football, such as Ali Daei, who for a long time was the top scorer in international matches, or Mehdi Taremi, shining in European clubs, have become idols for millions of fans. Ali Daei scored 109 goals for the national team — a record that remained unbeaten until Cristiano Ronaldo surpassed it.

Club football: the battle of giants

Inside Iran, club football is no less exciting. The country's top division is called the Persian Gulf Pro League, which includes 16 teams. But the main heroes of this tournament are two Tehran giants: "Persepolis" and "Esteghlal." Their confrontation is known as the Tehran Derby — one of the most principled and passionate football matches in Asia. These clubs have dominated the championship for decades[reference:8].

"Persepolis" is a club that embodies the people's love and the rebellious spirit. It was founded in 1963 and has since become the most titled club in Iran. "Esteghlal" (formerly known as "Taj," which means "Crown") was founded in 1945 and also has an army of loyal fans. Both clubs are based at the Azadi Stadium in Tehran — an enormous arena that can accommodate nearly 80,000 spectators, where the atmosphere during the derby heats up to the extreme. In recent years, the giant "Sepahan" from Isfahan has also joined these giants, regularly fighting for the championship and attracting star legionnaires.

Interestingly, Iranian clubs have recently begun to attract famous European footballers. For example, World Cup champion Steven Nzonzi moved to "Persepolis," and Gael Kakuta and Brian Dabo to "Esteghlal." In 2024, striker Wesam Ben Yedder joined "Sepahan," causing a real media sensation across the Middle East. This speaks to the growing level and attractiveness of the Iranian championship for foreign stars.

Sport with an ancient history: wrestling and traditions

If football is a modern passion, then wrestling is the soul of Iran. It is often called the national sport. Its roots go back to ancient Persia, when physical strength and the skill of a duel were the main virtues of a warrior. Iranian wrestlers in freestyle and Greco-Roman style have always been among the strongest in the world. They regularly win medals at the Olympic Games and world championships.

A special place is occupied by the traditional wrestling "varzesh-pahlevani" and rituals in "zurhane" — strength houses. Zurhane are ancient covered buildings where men engage in not just physical exercises but perform ritual movements with spears, shields, and bows to the accompaniment of drums and epic poems. This is a blend of martial art, gymnastics, and spiritual practice that nurtures both body and spirit. Zurhane are included in the UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage, and these traditions continue to live today, attracting both elderly masters and youth.

Iranian weightlifters are also a source of national pride. Weightlifting has brought the country many Olympic medals. Iranian athletes have won 7 gold, 6 silver, and 6 bronze medals in this sport at the Olympic Games. The names of such heroes as Soroush Moradi, Olympic champion in the 2016 category up to 94 kg, or Arian Salimi, Olympic champion in 2024, are known to every Iranian. These victories are perceived as a national festival.

Volleyball — the second most popular modern sport

After football, the most popular modern sport in Iran is volleyball. The men's Iranian volleyball team has made a real breakthrough on the international stage in recent years. Since 2013, it has participated in the World League and in 2014 took fourth place — the best result in its history. Iranian volleyball players are known for their height, powerful serving, and team spirit. Matches of the national team gather full halls, and fans create an incredible atmosphere, comparable only to football derbies.

Volleyball in Iran is actively developing at all levels: from school teams to professional clubs. Many Iranian players play in the strongest European championships — the Italian Serie A, the Turkish Super League, and the Russian championship. This sport attracts youth with its dynamism and spectacularness, and it can be said with confidence that Iranian volleyball has a great future.

Other popular sports

In addition to football, wrestling, and volleyball, basketball, handball, karate, and bodybuilding are popular in Iran. The country has many sports clubs and federations, and the state annually allocates significant funds for the development of sports infrastructure. In 2010, spending on sports was about 80 million dollars. New stadiums, swimming pools, and martial arts halls are being built, which allows to raise new champions.

Special attention deserves equestrian sports, which have ancient traditions in Iran. Polo, which is called "chavgan" in Iran, was known here in ancient times and was considered a royal pastime. Today, equestrian clubs operate in many cities, and traditional horse races and polo competitions attract connoisseurs of antiquity and aristocratic sports.

Women in Iranian sport

Women's sport in Iran is a separate and very important topic. Despite cultural and religious restrictions, Iranian women actively engage in various sports: football, volleyball, wrestling, ice hockey, and even weightlifting. They win medals at Asian and world championships, as well as at the Olympic Games. In recent years, the number of women's sports teams and sections in Iran has been growing, and the state is gradually expanding opportunities for women in sports.

One of the most striking examples is the women's Iran team in futsal, which has achieved significant success on the Asian stage. In general, women's sport in Iran is developing slowly but surely, and this gives hope that in the future Iranian athletes will shine as brightly as men.

Olympic achievements: national pride

Iran is one of the leading sports powers in Asia, and this is confirmed by its Olympic history. Throughout its history of participation in the Olympic Games, Iranian athletes have won dozens of medals, with the main part of them in wrestling and weightlifting. At the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, Iran won 12 medals: 3 gold, 6 silver, and 3 bronze. Such results place Iran in a row with the strongest sports countries in the world.

Among the outstanding Olympians of Iran are wrestler Hassan Yazdani, champion of the 2016 Olympic Games and three-time world champion, weightlifter Soroush Moradi, and many others. Each Olympic medal becomes an event of national scale, and heroes-sportsmen receive the status of national legends.

Sport as a reflection of the Iranian character

Sport in Iran is more than just competitions. It is a means of self-expression, a means of cultivating will and patriotism. Iranians love sport passionately, emotionally, with full dedication. Fans at the stadiums create such an atmosphere that chills run down the spine. Iranian sport is a combination of ancient wisdom and modern ambitions, traditions and innovations. Here, they honor the memory of great fighters of the past and at the same time cheer for footballers who take the field in European cups.

The sports culture of Iran continues to develop. New facilities are being built in the country, youth interest in a healthy lifestyle is growing, and new stars are emerging. Despite all political and economic challenges, Iranian sport remains one of the most vivid and unique phenomena in the world. It unites people, brings joy to victories, and teaches to accept defeats with dignity. Therefore, it has a future — as great as its past.
